Albert Alan Penn

Albert “Alan” Penn passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Medina, Ohio. Alan leaves behind a legacy of service. He will be remembered for his love of family, his selfless service, and his dedication to improving the lives of children and communities around the world.

Alan was born in Delaware, Ohio, on November 20,1948 to Albert (2018) and Thelma (Harris) Penn (2007). Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Jeri (Kipp) Penn, daughter, Jody (James) Minter, son, Randy (Jen Watkins) Penn, grandchildren, Prestin, Pierce, and Peytyn Minter, brothers Mike (Kathy), Mark (Becky) and many nieces and nephews.

Alan’s career spanned more than 50 years across education and community leadership, with local and statewide involvement. He began as an agriculture business instructor and FFA advisor at Montgomery County Vocational School. While there he worked with the state department to establish the small animal care program. In 1975, Alan accepted the positions of Dean of Students and Agriculture Supervisor at the Medina County Career Center. In 1989, Alan finished his career as the Director of the West Shore Vocational District based in Lakewood City Schools and began working as a Supervisor of student teachers for the University of Akron.

Alan served as president of Governor Taft’s Ohio Community Service Council which promoted volunteerism, through groups such as Points of Light and AmeriCorps. The group encouraged meaningful service through Make a Difference Day Ohio.

Alan was dedicated to the service of others through Kiwanis International. He became a member of the Medina Breakfast Kiwanis Club in 1975. He also was a member of the Lakewood Kiwanis Club, the All-Ohio Internet Kiwanis Club, and an honorary member of the Medina Sunrise Rotary Club. His dedication provided him the opportunity to serve in many local, District and International positions, leading up to serving as International Kiwanis President in 2011-2012. During Alan’s term of office, Kiwanis partnered with UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide through the Eliminate Project.

Following his term of office Alan served as volunteer Executive Director of the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation which gives grants to local Kiwanis Clubs to improve communities.

Alan was recently appointed to the position of Executive Director for the Medina County Community Foundation, bringing with him his lifelong commitment to service.

Alan was a member of the Medina United Methodist Church where he served and provided support in many capacities. He organized the MUMC Golf league; led and supported the Keeping Connected Luncheon which is a monthly lunch with a program for adults.

Alan knew no strangers. He led with his heart. He brought people together by celebrating everyone’s unique qualities. He leaves behind a legacy of service. Alan enjoyed playing golf, fishing with his grandchildren, traveling, collecting Pez, and drinking Diet Dr. Pepper.

Friends may call on Friday, August 28, from 4-8 pm at Waite Funeral Home, 765 N. Court Street, Medina, Ohio 44256. On Saturday, August 29, visitation will be from 10-11 am followed by a Celebration of Life at 11 am at the Medina United Methodist Church, 4747 Foote Rd., Medina, OH 44256.
