Obituary

Alice B. Klagge, 96, passed away at home while gardening on May 31, 2026. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to James and Helen Sladek, she grew up in Euclid, and earned a Nursing Diploma from St. Luke’s Hospital. Alice worked as a delivery room nurse for several years, and in fact was the first delivering mother at Deaconess Hospital in a new delivery room in 1954 and then in another new delivery room there in 1961. Starting in 1970 she worked as a nurse on the Drug Addiction Ward at the VA Hospital in Brecksville, retiring in 1992. Alice was an active member of the Medina Spinning and Weaving Guild, making countless blankets and fabric creations for family and friends.

Alice married Charles “Buzz” Klagge in 1951, and they would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary but for his passing in 2014. Alice and Buzz renovated several rental properties in Ohio City, and finished the interior of a log cabin in Richfield, where they lived out their years. Alice was a faithful member of Brecksville United Methodist Church for many years, and then of Richfield United Church of Christ for many more. Alice and Buzz loved to travel—first numerous family camping vacations throughout the US and Canada, and then travelling the world, visiting Southern Africa, Australia, Mexico, South America, China, Thailand, Alaska, and Europe—some multiple times.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Sharon, daughter Chris, and granddaughter Jessica. She is survived by her children James (and Kathy) of Blacksburg, VA; David (and Anne) of Cleveland, OH; Jill (and Doug) O’Banion, of Xenia, OH; son-in-law Dale Stanley, of Richfield, OH; and niece Lorene (and Curtis) Coe, of Boise, ID. Alice loved thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

The family especially gives thanks for the staff of Regina Health Center, and the enthusiasm and loving care of Alice’s church family, especially Phyllis Sommer, Beth Gerber, Becky Monegan, Pat Worton and Brenda Lindsey.

Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery at 10am on Saturday, June 13th. A memorial service led by Rev. Allan Lane will be held at Richfield United Church of Christ, 4340 Streetsboro Rd., Richfield, OH, at 11am, followed by a light lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the church or to the Summit County Humane Society.
