Obituary

Loved by many, Andrew Phillips met his Lord and Savior on June 19, 2020 at the age of 65.  Drew battled dementia for several years and passed away peacefully under Hospice care. Drew was born in Akron, OH and attended Buchtel High School, and then graduated from Akron University with both his undergrad and graduate degrees in Education. After completing his education, Drew began teaching in Medina City Schools where he touched many lives. He felt called to be a teacher. Drew was also a devoted husband and father. He was married to the love of his life, wife Miriam for 28 years and together they raised their triplet daughters in Medina. Drew loved his daughters greatly and they were a source of much pride & joy to him. He was such a wonderful dad, a dad who watched Barbie movies, built his daughters a zip line in the backyard, and sang & read to them always. Drew was also an active community member in his hometown of Medina, OH. His family had a significant historical presence there and he became known as the family historian.  If Drew was not spending time with his wife and children, he was working to restore his family home where they lived until recently.  Drew's love of singing began in High School where he had the lead in two musicals. As an adult he spent much time singing in the Medina County Chorus and on his praise team at church, as well as playing guitar and singing with many Medina students. Drew also enjoyed swimming and usually began his day in the pool. One of his favorite things was the family vacations in the Outer Banks almost every summer.

Drew is survived by his beloved wife, Miriam; his three cherished daughters, Anna (Jordan) Lock, Grace Phillips, and Caroline Phillips; his brand new infant granddaughter, Lucy Claire Lock; brother, Tom Phillips; sister, Meredith (Bill) Lehmer; many cherished nieces and nephews; and a lifetime of dear friends. Drew was preceded in death by his parents Hewes and Dorothea Phillips of Akron, OH.

The family will hold a private graveside memorial for Drew on Wednesday, June 24 with a larger public memorial celebration to be planned for a later date. The family will gratefully accept donations to honor Drew's memory to: The Preservation Fund for the McDowell-Phillips Home with The Medina County Historical Society, 206 North Elmwood St., Medina Ohio 44256 or online at medinacountyhistoricalsociety.com.

The family would also like to thank both the entire staff (especially the wonderful nurses) and caregivers at Arden Courts of Bath where Drew spent his last 3 years and also the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center for their loving and compassionate care they gave to Drew in his final days.
