Barry A.
Smithberger
September 3, 1949 – May 17, 2025
Barry A. Smithberger, age 75 of Seville, Ohio passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at home after a brief battle with cancer. In the days leading up to his passing, Barry was surrounded by a stream of loving family and friends, coming by to spend time with him and share fond memories. Barry was born to the late Paul and Imogene (Bowman) Smithberger, on September 3, 1949, in Medina, Ohio. He graduated from Cloverleaf High School Class of 1967, and spent the next 3 years of his life patriotically serving his country in the US Armed Forces. That time was a source of great satisfaction and pride for the rest of his life. In 1972 he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Rupp and together they made their loving home in Seville where Barry became a farmer alongside his father-in-law, Kenneth E. Rupp, brothers-in-law, Richard Garrison and Kenneth D. Rupp, and special uncle, Earl Rupp. Coming from a family known for being hard workers, farming was a natural fit and suited him well. He finally retired several years ago passing on his share of the operation into the capable hands of a new generation. The last few months of his life were spent watching the construction of their new milking facility. Barry took great pleasure in helping others his entire life. He would gladly assist or do any odd task that might arise. He may have removed the snow from your driveway, helped you chop down a tree, plow your garden, weld something back together again for you or come up with an innovative way to fix just about anything. (Usually better than it was originally.) The Smithberger pool is shared with many and is always an active spot during the summer. Barry took great delight in watching others enjoying themselves, and as soon as he heard splashing and joyful shouts he was quickly poolside for a friendly chat. In his retirement years he enjoyed spending more time with his family and especially enjoyed attending any activity in which his grandchildren were involved. The precious recent comments coming from his very young great nieces and nephews are a testament to his special affinity and way with children. Barry could strike up a conversation and make friends instantly, he had a way of putting people at ease and 'never met a stranger'. All who knew or met him will miss his contagious laugh and friendly twinkle in his eyes. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jean (Rupp) Smithberger; his children, Carrie (Eric) Stoner, Tricia (Nate) Hibler, and David (Shawna) Smithberger; his grandchildren, Matthew, Scott, and Alyssa Stoner, Andrew and Emma Hibler, and Braylon, Layla, and Ava Smithberger; his siblings, Janet (Bill) Whitmore and Dennis (Barb) Smithberger; his sisters in law, Kathy Hastings, Kate Walley, and Mary Rupp; his brothers in law, Rick (Kathy) Garrison, Ken (Carol) Rupp as well as a multitude of cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews along with many dear lifelong friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Imogene Smithberger, his brother, Ron Smithberger, and his in-laws, Kenneth and Lillian Rupp. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Waite Funeral Home, 765 N Court Street, Medina, OH 44256. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 10:45 a.m. at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio 44273.
