Obituary

Carol Virginia Spencer Gibson, age 98, of Medina, passed away on June 17, 2025. Born April 25, 1927 to the late Guy and Mabel (Greenough) Spencer. She was a graduate of Medina High School in 1944 and attended Hiram College for 2 years while working for the Treasurer. During her career she was employed in various stenographic and secretarial positions, first by the Erie Railroad in Cleveland and later by The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C & O). Her favorite position with the C & O was Secretary to the Vice President-Operations in Cleveland and then in Baltimore, Maryland when the C & O merged with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B & O). In 1986 due to the merger of the C & O-B & O with the Seaboard Coastline (renamed CSX) she was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida as Personnel Staff Officer. Her husband, Gene, also employed by CSX, was transferred to Jacksonville at that time as CSX Director of Casualty Insurance. In 1988 she and her husband retired from the railroad and in 1995 moved back to Medina. They were members of the Medina United Methodist Church.

Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gene (2/8/01) with whom she celebrated 46 1/2 years of marriage, her brothers Jack, Robert and Donald Spencer, sisters-in-law Dorothy Kreiger Spencer, June Vandevier Spencer and Dolores Mellert Spencer, nieces Sandra Spencer Maupin and Cheryl Spencer Deyling, nephew David William Deyling.

She is survived by sister-in-law Sheila Gibson, nephews Jack Spencer, Jr. and Donald Spencer, Jr., and many great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. A special thank you to great niece Kimberly Winkler and her husband Kevin and their sons for the help they gave Carol and Sheila the past several years.
