Carole Ann Hassell, age 78, of Elyria, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. She was born in Apollo, Pennsylvania on September 29, 1946, to the late Stanley and Helen (Kwiatkowski) Fillar.
She was an avid horsewoman, well known for breeding thoroughbreds and many top racehorses including Harlan's Holiday, a top thoroughbred, G1 Stakes winner, Florida Derby winner, and 2002 Kentucky Derby favorite with career earnings in excess of 3 million dollars. Carole was a pedigree expert and very skilled and experienced with nicking (the bloodlines of thoroughbred racehorses). She was the General Manager in excess of 30 years at the Double D Farm Corp. Everyone's favorite Horseshow mom, she was patient, kind, and generous to others. She impacted many lives of all those around her. Most of all she loved her family, nothing made her happier than to be playing scrabble surrounded by those she loved. She had a knack for design and decorating, and she especially loved the Christmas holidays, it was her favorite time of year. Carole went all out, transforming her home into a spectacular festive backdrop for many family gatherings. She loved cooking and camping trips with her family and was the center of any family gathering.
She is survived by her beloved children, Deborah Cusack, DeAnne (Carl) Dench-Layton, and Darlene Crumley; her 5 grandchildren, Sydney Cusack, Alexis (Isaac) Payne, Raymond Gunderman, Jr., Michayla Maxfield, and Kadin Crumley; her 2 great grandchildren, Caliber Maxfield, and Magnolia Payne; her sister, Donna Dewey, and many extended family members along with a lifetime of friends and colleagues.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Helen (Kwiatkowski) Fillar, her brother-in-law, Donald Dewey, and her grandson, Dylan Hassell.
