Chester Cypher was born on September 20, 1931, at his home in Butler, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Chester V. and Eileen A. Cypher. While at Butler High School Chester met the love of his life, Tillie (the girl in the yellow dress) at his track meet. He shared stories of his high school sports days over the years meticulously remembering his teammates, games, and coaches. After enlisting in the army, he boxed, played football, sang with a band, and had opportunities to travel in Europe while stationed in Germany. Upon discharge, Chester and Tillie married in 1953. After graduating from Physical Therapy school, he began his career in Akron. Followed by starting the Physical Therapy Department at Medina hospital in addition to his private practice. In high school he was recognized for his “deep and genuine concern for others.” This characterized Chester's professional work with patients and all his activities. While his children were young, he co-founded the Medina Peewee Football League- which continues. Chester was busy with attending all his children's school, sport, and dance events; enjoying every minute. Sharing stories of the family’s boating adventures on Lake Erie always left an impression on the grandchildren. His memory of every detail was amazing!
After “retirement” he continued his lifelong love of sports participating in Senior Olympics, dancing with Tillie at community centers, senior softball league through his eighties, and a bowling league. Chester and Tillie sang, acted, and danced with the Black River Comedy Club. Chester and Tillie were always on the move during their 67 years of marriage. Chester looked after all his wife's needs during her battle with Alzheimer’s disease until the end. Together they read, did crossword puzzles, coloring, and danced. After they moved to independent living he led the exercise classes, danced, and was an ambassador. Going strong at 90, Chester completed an obstacle and zip-line course saying, “It felt like flying!”
Chester never missed Sunday Mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, reading the bible daily, clearly stating his faith in our Lord and love of his family and country. Chester is survived by his children Jeffrey, Carey, Scott, (Susan) and Elizabeth (Michael); Grandchildren Bradley, Andrew (Austin), Scott (Claire), Stephen (Julia), Alex (Kaitlyn), Eric (Ashley), Luke (Hannah), Claire (Theo); 15 Great Grandchildren Jeremiah, Scarlet, Brooklyn, Martin, Atlas, Aurora, Elliot, Caroline, Connor, Henry, Paul, Monica, Rita, two great grandbabies soon and his sister Patricia. Chester, a man of action and faith. Work hard and play hard!
