Chester Wayne
Welty
April 22, 1936 – February 1, 2025
Chester Wayne Welty, age 88, passed away on February 1, 2025. He was born in Chester Township, Wayne County on April 22, 1936, to the late Leo and Leota (Boreman) Welty. Chester is survived by his beloved children Katrina Ward, Brian Welty, and Mark (Gay) Welty; his three grandchildren, Abigail Ward and Andrew Ward, and Evan Welty, and his great-granddaughter Ava, and many nieces and nephews.
Chester is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mavis, as well as his two brothers, Roy and Donald Welty.
He graduated in 1958 from the College of Wooster with a major in economics. While at Wooster, he received four varsity letters in baseball and basketball and was awarded the Mange Award for being the most outstanding athlete in the graduating class. He then went to Glendale, Arizona to attend the American Institute of Foreign Trade (Thunderbird). Upon graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served two years as a Chaplain Assistant at Fort Richie, Maryland. While in the service, he received the highest score in proficiency in the company and the highest score in Chemical, Biological, and Radiology School, and was deemed Soldier of the Day. Upon leaving the Army, he was given a Letter of Appreciation.
In 1961, he joined IBM where he worked in sales for thirty-three years. He retired with twenty-eight One-Hundred Percent Clubs and eight Golden Circles; awards given to those with the highest sales performances in the United States.
Chet would say that the best thing he ever did in his life was to marry his high-school sweetheart, Mavis (Keener). They were married on June 22, 1958, after dating for six years. Mavis was the love of his life and such a bright and beautiful person.
Chet was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1976. He served on the council for 9 years, volunteered in the church's food pantry, and as an usher and communion server.
