Obituary

Family, friends, cohorts, and former employees—we regret to announce the passing of Gary Dale Harris of Valley City, Ohio, on April 30, 2026, at the age of 76.

Gary was born July 21, 1949, in Gassaway, West Virginia, and was raised in Braxton County. He was the son of Leslie and Ruby Harris, who preceded him in death.

Gary is survived by his siblings, half-sister Karen Buckner and Pamela Harris, both of West Virginia. He was also deeply loved and supported by many cousins and close friends, including Karen and Bob Kelly of Florida; Donna Leary of California; Danielle and Charles Santos of California; Alvina Sives of Texas; Tammy Sutton of North Carolina; Connie Stafinski of Ohio; Bonnie Stewart of Ohio; Robert “Butch” Dobbins of Florida and Ohio; Jared Carson of Ohio; Diane Smith; Sheri Griffin; Barb Meadows; Betty Dobbins; Jacqueline and Herb of Florida; Missy Griffin Williams of West Virginia; J.D. Straight and family of West Virginia; Aaron and Jack; Jody Jones; and his two godchildren, Jamie and Connie.

Gary also considered many dear friends as family, including Paige Smith, Aaron and Knox Hymes, Shelley Patera, Loren, Dean, Noah, and Irene Smith, along with the many caregivers and aides who supported him.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, completing three tours in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Corporal (E-4) and was a two-time Purple Heart recipient. His service earned him numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Combat Action Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He truly lived by the words, “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” Semper Fi.

A lifelong believer in education, Gary overcame early challenges to pursue his studies. He graduated from Fairview High School in 1967 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in personnel management from MCI in Washington, D.C., a nursing degree from Cleveland State University, and a master’s degree in child growth and development.

Gary dedicated his life to helping others. He served as Director of Medical Services for MTD for over 19 years and provided counseling in areas including addiction, marriage, and mental health. He was especially proud of the lives he was able to impact through his work.

He also owned and operated the Abbeyville Tavern with his Aunt Jean Cogar in Medina, Ohio for 20 years, where he built a strong sense of community.

Gary had a passion for travel and learning, participating in exchange programs in Tbilisi, Georgia; Kiev, Ukraine; Baku, Azerbaijan; and Moscow. He taught scuba diving and underwater photography and was a collector of eagle figurines, amassing over 1,700 in his lifetime.

Gary joined the Catholic Church in 1972 and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, often attending St. Martin’s. He was a lifetime member of the Purple Heart Club, Vietnam Veterans organizations, the American Legion, and the Moose Lodge, and volunteered with the American Red Cross and other organizations.

Gary will be remembered for his resilience, generosity, and unwavering belief in helping others. He often said, “Education is the greatest thing you can do. You can never stop being educated. Never be afraid to stretch your hand to those in need.”

Friends and family are invited to gather for a time of visitation on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 from 4:00-8:00 pm. Services and burial with military honors will be held in West Virginia on Friday, May 8, 2026.

He fought like the Marine he was, brave, valiant & courageous, never giving up. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Gary will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Memories may be shared online at www.waitefuneralhome.com.
