Obituary

Gary C. Meyer, a man defined by his devotion to family, a proud naval career, and a legendary knack for storytelling, passed away at the age of 79. Born on February 28, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, Gary was the son of the late Earl and Virginia Meyer.

A 1965 graduate of West Tech High School, Gary's life changed forever that same year when he joined the U.S. Navy. His service as a P-3 Flight Engineer took him across the globe-from the Philippines to Norway, Japan, Iceland, and Thailand-with duty stations in Maine, California, Texas, Hawaii, and Maryland. He served with honor for 15 years and was a proud Vietnam War Veteran.

While his naval career took him far, his heart remained with Frances J. Fischbach, whom he met by chance on a public bus. They married on November 25, 1967, beginning a beautiful journey of over 55 years. After leaving the military, Gary settled back in Ohio, working as a skilled mechanic at NASA in Brookpark for 22 years.

Gary's greatest joy was his family. He was the dedicated father of Sheri (Gary) Garnet, Michael (Annie) Meyer, and Jeffrey (GaYeon) Meyer. He stepped into his favorite role as "Grandpa" to eight grandchildren: Brandon, Jason (Stephanie), Megan (Logan), Aiden, Logann, Larkin, Ewan, and Olive. Whether it was a 6 a.m. hockey practice or a 9 p.m. baseball game, Gary was always in the stands, cheering the loudest.

In his retirement, Gary stayed active through woodworking, painting, and golfing with lifelong friends. He was particularly proud of his '63 Chevy Nova SS convertible, which he meticulously maintained for car shows. Above all, he was known for his "exaggerated" stories that never failed to entertain, and his close bond with his sister, Judy Kumher, with whom he loved sharing trips to the casino and concerts.

After losing his beloved Frances in 2023, Gary carried a quiet longing to be reunited with her. He is now at peace, preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, artistic talent, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. He will be deeply missed by his sister, his children, his grandchildren, and a host of friends who were truly family.

The family will welcome guests between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Waite Funeral Home, 3300 Center Road, Brunswick, Ohio. Gary will be laid to rest with military honors on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio.
