James Lewis Haynes

In loving memory of James Lewis Haynes. Born October 23rd, 1959, Lew lived a life marked by devotion, laughter, and quiet strength.

Lew had more than a few unexpected talents. Growing up, he was a competitive figure skater, roller skater, and trumpet player. It was his time in band that would lead him to Patti, the love of his life, whom he began dating at just 15 years old.

He was a devoted father to Mike and Zach. To his family, Lew was the anchor; selfless, steady, and always taking care of everyone. He taught his sons the meaning of hard work, generosity, loyalty, and showing up.

Lew worked his way up from loading trucks to building a prominent career as a customs broker. He genuinely loved what he did and the people he worked with.

Lew loved Cleveland sports, especially the Guardians, and the annual tradition of attending Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He embraced life with a goofy spirit. He was famous for photobombing strangers’ pictures and telling wonderfully inappropriate dad jokes, which he delivered with perfect timing.

Most of all, he loved his family. One of the purest joys of Lew’s life was being “Papa Lew,” throwing his arms open and calling out “Huddy!” each and every time he saw his grandson, Hudson. He was also overjoyed to be expecting his first granddaughter later this year. That simple joy, those open arms, and that smile capture exactly who he was.

He will be remembered not for titles or milestones, but for the way he made people feel: loved, supported, and warm.

Lew was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and James Coy Haynes Sr., and his brother, James Coy Haynes Jr.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Patti Jo Haynes; his sons, Michael Haynes and his wife Kate, Zachary Haynes and his wife Stephanie; his grandson, Hudson James Haynes, who proudly carries his grandfather’s name; a granddaughter on the way; and his beloved bird, Jack.
