Obituary

"When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure." James P. Plummer embraced love for over 100 years, and we will treasure that love until we meet again. Born in Cleveland January 10, 1924, to Prentiss Durward and Maybelle Owens Plummer, Jim was welcomed to his heavenly home in Cleveland October 19, 2024, by his wife Lois Jean (Lucas) and son Jerry. He enjoyed his earthly home for 100 years.

Until a few weeks ago, Jim was still driving, living in the family home, and staying in touch with meaningful organizations he loved to talk about. His early years inspired the many stories he told so well, and that we enjoyed. The family moved to a Medina County farm in 1929, where he loved the woods. Due to his parents' divorce in 1932, Jim moved back to Cleveland with his father. He loved being part of the YMCA, graduated early with enough credits from East Tech High School, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1942.

Jim said "he was mad" after the Pearl Harbor attack, so enlisting and acquiring electronics training were important to him. Before being honorably discharged in January 1948, he became an Aviation Electronics Technician's Mate First Class, providing radio communications for Navy blimps and airplanes. He served on bases in New Jersey, Brazil, and Newfoundland/Labrador (from where supply flights to an Army base in Greenland were made), and he was stationed in Trinidad on Victory over Japan Day. He always joked that he spent six years in the Navy but was never based on a ship. He received the following medals: American Area Campaign Day, World War II Victory, and Good Conduct.

After the Navy, he studied engineering at the University of Akron, and then was employed at Henry Furnace until 1959. During that period, he met Lois, and they married on June 10, 1951, in Medina. Before starting his own business, Plummer Communications, in 1970, he worked as an electronics tech at NASA, and as a field supervisor/engineer for RCA.

He was active in many organizations: ten Masonic memberships, the Medina Kiwanis, Medina County Society for Handicapped Citizens, and Medina United Methodist Church, the church in which he married Lois. He was proud to be active at church through serving on the leadership board and as a confirmation teacher, usher, and coffee ministry. He was always the first congregant in the church on Sunday mornings, making sure the coffee was ready for fellowship.

He even had time for some hobbies, in between helping care for the five children he and Lois raised and enjoyed. The biggest was earning his private pilot's license in 1974 and owning three planes, the last one, a Mooney, for 20 years. With that hobby, he and Lois took many flying vacations both within and beyond the states. He said he landed his plane in every contiguous state except Washington. Other hobbies included ham radio operator, scuba diver, motorcycle or scooter rider, and saxophone player. He was a previous member of the Medina Community Band, and then joined Litchfield Town Band, where he participated until the age of 99. His activities helped keep him occupied after losing Lois to cancer in April 1994.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, just shy of their 43rd anniversary, his son Jerry, and most of his cherished older friends and family members.

He is survived by his sister, Donna (Robert, deceased) Norton; sons Donald (Elizabeth), Larry (Becky), and Darrell (Sally); daughter Peggy (Michael) Weber; grandchildren Charles (Sara), Matthew, Lynn, Jason, and James (Jennifer) Plummer, Katherine (Dustin) Reid, Michael (Tian), Julia (fiancée Vijay) and Peter (fiancée Madeleine) Weber; great-grandchildren Parker and Andrew Plummer, and Isaac and Cameron Reid; and nieces, nephews, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
