Joan Ann Smith (nee Peth), age 90, of Hinckley, OH passed away peacefully at home on April 14, 2026 with her children at her side. She was born on October 2, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio; daughter of the late parents: David and Mary (nee Rusinko) Peth.
She graduated from Highland High School in 1953. On June 16, 1956, Joan married William
‘Bill” Smith at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Hinckley. She was a bookkeeper until she became a mother and diligent homemaker. After her children were independent, Joan became a bookkeeper at Ameritrust, True Temper, and Van Dorn until she retired in 1994. Joan was an avid reader, talented cross-stitcher and seamstress. She loved baking and cooking for her family, gardening, bowling, 1000 piece puzzles, walking, power boating on the Great Lakes and 28 years of Venice, FL life with her Hinckley friends. Joan’s last years back in Ohio were spent with fun-filled family events.
Joan is lovingly survived by her three children: Carol Johnson of Euclid, OH, Daniel (Lisa) Smith of Hinckley, OH, and Robert (Pam) Smith of Hinckley, OH; four grandchildren: Eric (Danyella) Johnson, Devin (Cassandra) Johnson, Maria (Hugh) O’Neill, Melissa (Kyle) Dennis; five great-grandchildren: Posey Johnson, Marigold Johnson, Zoey Johnson, Madeline Johnson and Isabella Dennis. Joan is additionally survived by her siblings: brother David Peth of North Royalton, OH; sisters: Patricia Hale of Medina, OH, and Kay Burdick of Bayview, Idaho.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband William V. Smith, sister Gail B. Winterfield of Oak Harbor, OH and great grandson Sonny Elis Johnson.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday June 13, 2026 at 11AM with family receiving friends at 10AM at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1605 Center Rd in Hinckley, OH 44233.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations in Joan Smith’s memory to the Southwest Health Foundation, benefiting UH Seidman Cancer Center at Southwest General Hospital, 18697 Bagley Road, Suite C‑105, Middleburg Heights, OH 44130.
Joan’s private Interment will take place alongside her husband Bill at Hope Memorial Gardens in Hinckley, OH on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, their 70th Wedding Anniversary.
