Obituary

John Robert Irvin, age 95, passed away August 11, 2025 in Akron, Ohio. He was born March 3, 1930 in Los Angeles, California to the late Edward and Lillian (Patterson) Irvin.

John was a devout and active member of Grace Presbyterian, Harvest Presbyterian, and Redeemer (Presbyterian) Church. He was a baseball coach, an outdoors man, and an avid reader.  Like his own father, John spent many years as an active scout leader having earned the honor of Eagle Scout himself.  John was a self-employed general building contractor and worked hard all his life to provide for his family as his top priority. After retirement he applied his interest and talent in woodworking and general construction to selflessly create useful and beautiful things for his church, family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of  72 years, Shirley (Goodale) Irvin.

He is survived by his children Marilyn (Donald) Ruff, Craig (Gabrielle) Becker-Irvin, John Edward Irvin, and Donna Benabou; grandchildren Ryan Allison, Lauren Allison, Zachary Irvin, Shawn Irvin, Danielle (Kyle) Ryyth, Joshua Benabou, and Leah Benabou; great grandchildren Jayden, John, and Noah; sister Faye Horner; brother Edward Irvin; and a lifetime of fellow church members and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Redeemer Church, 190 W. Streetsboro Rd., Hudson, OH 44236, at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest privately with his wife Shirley at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Peninsula.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor John by directing gifts to the Ohio Association of Foodbanks .
