Obituary

Kenneth Leonard Crandall, age 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 7, 2024. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 19, 1930, to the late Raymond and Edythe (Hula) Crandall. Ken graduated from John Adams High School in 1948, and Western Reserve in 1951, and then Cornell University in 1953 for Master City and Regional Planning. He worked as the Deputy Director of Cuyahoga Regional Planning, Planner for architectural firm of Lesko Associates, Westlake Public School Administrator, and the Service Director for Westlake where he retired from in 1992. He was a councilman for Westlake and had a private consulting practice for 18 years and finally retired at age 91 after serving numerous cities, villages, and school districts in NE Ohio, PA, and NY where he worked with private developers. Ken was appointed to the La Grange Planning Commission and was serving until his passing. He was even honored with Ken Crandall Day which is November 20 annually in Richfield.

Ken met his future wife Janet in Sunday School at the age of 13. They married in 1951 and enjoyed 72 years together. Ken loved to travel usually with friends from Medina Kiwanis. Together he and Janet enjoyed many trips out west to Colorado, and Europe. He was a model train enthusiast. He also was a brakeman volunteer with the Cuyahoga Railroad. He enjoyed gardening and planting trees (pines). Over the years, Ken was an Eagle Scout, member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and a commissioner of Westlake flag football.  He also was a member of the St John Westshore Hospital Board and a member of Friends of the Library. Ken and Janet were honored as Mr. & Mrs. Westlake in 1984. Ken was a man of faith and long-standing member of Westlake United Methodist Church and then LaGrange United Methodist Church.  Ken was very musically inclined and played the drums most of his life and kept the beat going for everybody.  He was a drummer in High School where he played as a Drum Major in band and Concerts. For all Ken's accomplishments his proudest times were spent with his loving family. He was happiest in their company and never missed an opportunity to support his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with pride.  He will be deeply missed but his example will continue to be present in their lives.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Janet L. (Kash) Crandall; children, Scott (Joanne) Crandall, Susan (Tom) Robinson, David (Tracy) Crandall, Brian (Caren) Crandall; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way; along with a lifetime of collected friends and colleagues.
