Mark Allen Emery, 74, of Medina, would tell you he was an ordinary man, and ooh, what a lucky man he was. Ask those of us closest to him, though, and we'd tell you otherwise: he was extraordinary, and we were the lucky ones. He passed away unexpectedly in the earliest hour of September 24, 2026, leaving behind a family who adored him and a life full of noise, laughter, and love. He was born February 16, 1952, in Cleveland, to the late John D. and Thelma Marie (Kroha) Emery.
Mark served his country in the US Army, then spent years at Buckeye Forge as a steelworker, where he advocated for his fellow workers as a Steelworkers Union representative, before finishing his career as a machinist at Sherwood Industries. Retired for the past nine years, he kept himself in good health for us. He was an avid reader who loved to wander through science news and lose himself in science fiction, fantasy and horror — anything wonderfully macabre held his attention. He was a music lover who never missed a chance to crank it up, especially Ozzy, and a gardener who took pride in what he grew. He enjoyed a good show or movie, especially the kind with an edge of the strange. But none of it came close to how much he loved his family. To know Mark was to know a man who was funny without trying, outwardly loving, and endlessly, wonderfully himself — as husband, daddy, grandpa, brother, and friend to everyone lucky enough to know him.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dinah Jean (Norman) Emery; his daughters, Amy Lynn Emery and Sarah Elizabeth Emery, who will always be his little girls no matter their age; his grandchildren, Manny Emery, Emery Swain, and Layla Swain, who could always get him laughing; his brother, Jerry Emery; his sister-in-law, Diane Emery; his nieces and nephews, especially Jessica Emery; and a lifetime of collected friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Thelma Emery, and his brother, David Emery.
Private family services will be held.
“Leaving, I hate to see you cry
Grieving, I hate to say good-bye
Dust and ash forever, yeah
Though I know we must be parted
As sure as stars are in the sky
I’m going to see when it comes to glory
And I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Yes, I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side
…I was down, but now I’m flying
Straight across the great divide
I know you’re crying, but I’ll stop your crying
When I see you, I see you on the other side”
-Ozzy Osbourne, I’ll See You On The Other Side
We'll see you on the other side, Daddy.
