Obituary

Martin Josef “Marty” Baier, age 65, of Brunswick, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on May 15, 2026. He was born August 23, 1960, in Syracuse, New York, to the late Gottfried and Margaret Jean (Durrant) Baier. He was also raised by the late Robert and Priscilla Steinbach, whose guidance helped shape the man so many came to know and love.

Marty’s life was centered around family, friendship, laughter, and genuine connection with others. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Susan (Hiller) for nearly 34 years, and together they created a home filled with warmth, humor, and countless memories. He was a proud and loving father to Alex (Emma) Baier and Hannah (Joe) Durr, and an adoring grandfather to Jackson, Lillian, and Maren, who brought him endless joy. He is survived by his sisters, Judie Ritchie and Sharon Miller; brother, Ron Ritchie; and mother-in-law, Janet (Don, deceased) Hiller. He will also be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.

Marty worked as a Health Inspector for thirty years, a role that suited his thoughtful and caring nature. After retiring he felt like his life’s work wasn’t done and he went back to work in property maintenance for the city of Brooklyn, Parma and then Fairview. Though he took his work seriously, those closest to him knew that life for Marty was always about people first. He had a gift for making others feel welcome, valued, and comfortable. He was known for his sense of humor, his loyalty to friends and family, and his ability to make connections wherever he went. Marty had a natural talent for making friends wherever he went - his big heart will be forever missed.

Marty loved his Syracuse roots and Cleveland sports equally, appreciated good company and good beer — he was undoubtedly a bit of a “beer connoisseur” — and found joy in spending time with family and friends. One of his favorite events was the Oktoberfest celebration he and his wife, Sue, hosted for many years. He also enjoyed golfing with his buddies, trips to Vegas, collecting fishing lures, and watching and talking sports with his son, Alex. His legacy lives on in those he loved.

The family will welcome friends from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Waite Funeral Home, 3300 Center Road, Brunswick. A service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 am on Friday, May 22, 2026. Marty will be laid to rest at Hope Memorial Gardens in Hinckley.

In honoring Marty’s life, his family encourages everyone to raise a glass, share a story, cheer loudly for the Cavs and Guardians, and especially to hold close the people who matter most.

Memories and words of comfort may be shared with Marty’s family on his tribute page at www.waitefuneralhome.com (http://www.waitefuneralhome.com/).
