Mary Jane "Janie" Groh (Churchwell), 76, of Medina, died in the morning of Tuesday October 13th, 2026. She passed in peace after a long battle with primary progressive aphasia.
Janie was born in Denver on July 11th, 1950. She grew up in San Francisco, and moved to Stow, Ohio at age 13, when her dad was transferred by General Tire. Janie graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in 1968. She graduated valedictorian of her class from University of Akron where she specialized in child psychology and education and later completed her Masters. She worked as a school psychologist in several school systems in NE Ohio including Springfield, Wadsworth, and Tallmadge, before spending over 20 years in Medina City Schools. She also worked with Cleveland Christian Home for abused and neglected children and taught at Baldwin Wallace University. Janie was a tireless advocate for improving the lives of students and worked hand-in- hand with teachers to bring out the best for the children in their charge. She led early-morning parenting groups, workshops, and programs that extended support to children beyond the walls of the classroom. This passion and work ethic led to her being named School Psychologist of the year by the State Of Ohio.
Janie married the love of her life, Daniel C. Groh of Dover, Ohio, on November 1st, 1980. They shared many passions in life including gardening, fishing, a devout faith, singing in Choir, and making schools a better place for all Children.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents Evelyn and Paul Churchwell, her sister Joyce Ann Ramos, and her brother Joe.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel; children, Jeffrey (Hillary), Garrison (Paola) Groh, Kelly (Mike) Rick, and Wendy (Steve) Carey; grandchildren, Kieran and Madeline Groh, Emma, Clara, and Daniel Groh, Abigail Rick, and Benjamin (Josie) Carey and Joshua (Ashten) Carey; great grandchild, Bennett Carey; and her brother Jim (Joyce) Churchwell.
