Mary Louise Mackenzie, age 97, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Mary's life was marked by devoted service to her family, faith, and community.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert A. Mackenzie; her sisters Ruth, Janet, and Judy; her brother Walter; sister and brother in law Ruth and Ben Berger and parents Walter and Dorothy Brown , She is lovingly remembered by her cherished children: Elizabeth (Glenn) Levar, Robert ("Rusty") Mackenzie, Ellen (Jeff) Nutter, Bruce (Cindy) Mackenzie, and John (Kathy) Mackenzie. She also leaves behind her dear grandchildren: Kellie Poling (Doug), Michael Mackenzie, Bryan Mackenzie, Matthew Levar (Amy), and Paul Levar (Kathleen); her treasured great-grandchildren: Mallory, Cooper, Rowan, and Eleanor and many loved nephews and nieces. Mary is also survived by her beloved sister, Nancy Batig.
Born in Confluence PA and raised in Ohio, Mary graduated from John Marshall High School in 1946 and went on to attend Wittenberg College from 1946 to 1948 where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. While taking classes downtown Cleveland, she met Robert—beginning a courtship that led to their marriage in 1949 at Bethany Lutheran Church. Together, they built a life grounded in love, family, and shared faith.
Mary was a dedicated member of both Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rocky River, OH and Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland OH. Her faith guided her life, and she served her congregations and communities with dedication and compassion.
An active member of numerous social and charitable organizations throughout her life, Mary was especially devoted to the Ashland Garden Club. Her love of flowers and nature was reflected in her many award-winning floral arrangements at the Ashland County Fair, and she proudly served as both a long-time member and past President of the Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in Mary's honor to Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland or to the Salvation Army.
A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Waite Funeral Home in Medina. She will be laid to rest at a later date at Resthaven Memory Gardens 3700 Center Rd. Avon, OH.
