Melvin
Nicewander
July 6, 1940 – January 30, 2026
Melvin T. Nicewander, age 85, passed away on January 30, 2026, at Barberton Hospital.
He was born on July 6, 1940, in Coalwood, West Virginia, to Roy and Ollie Nicewander, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Helen Winters.
Mel is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Anna Mae Nicewander; his sons, Mark Nicewander (Connie) and Michael Nicewander (Stacey); seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who brought him great pride and joy. He is also survived by his siblings Robert Nicewander, Barbera Carile, and Ula Christian, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Mel served with the 593rd Engineer Company (Construction), including time stationed at Camp Century in Greenland—a Cold War initiative involving the construction of a facility beneath the Greenland ice cap. His service was a source of quiet pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, he worked for many years in construction industry and then at Wallover Oil Company in Strongsville, Ohio, where he eventually retired after 30 years. He was also a Little League coach, a successful farmer, and the owner of Seville Hardware, roles through which he touched many lives in his community. Mel was also an avid golfer, and in retirement spent many days chasing the little white ball around the course.
Mel was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Seville, where he found fellowship and strength in his faith. Known for his strong work ethic, willingness to help others, and devotion to family, he leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and love.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 6, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Waite Funeral Home, 765 North Court Street, Medina, Ohio.
