Michael John Lane

Michael John Lane (Mike/MikeyDude/Hermie), of Medina, Ohio, passed away on October 25, 2026 after a complicated medical battle. He was surrounded by laughter, love & a crazy family recounting their daily shenanigans and fond memories.

The man, the myth, the funny man, known to many as Mikey Dude, was welcomed into the world on October 11, 1953, in Batesville, Indiana, which was never the same from that day forward. He may or may not still be banned from the local county library. And some speculate his Alma mater, Whitewater High School, closed because he finally graduated. His formative years were typical of a young man being raised in a small town by his school principal father and social worker mother, alongside his younger twin sisters. He was a great classmate, athlete, son & brother.

While pursuing his education degree at Indiana State University, Mike met and stole Bonnie’s heart with the simple, yet effective pick-up line of “You know you’re really short, right?” It was love at first sight, that lasted for 52 years and beyond. These two crazy kids produced two strong-willed, determined daughters, Jessica and Suzie; who were endlessly annoying him, but always laughed at his corny, yet clever Dad Jokes/Mike Lane-isms and rolled their eyes in embarrassment, when his alter ego, Hermie made an appearance.

Due to his glorious mustache, Mike was often mistaken for Tom Selleck (Magnum P.I.). Luckily, the fame and glory never went to his head, however his Diamond level status with Hilton did, and he dang well made sure he always got his free water and cookies with every check in.

Mike was always the life of the party and often was described as a "character". If you needed a laugh, he was the man for the job. Never one to shy away from a ridiculous outfit to get a chuckle, his kids endured him dressed in a French Maid costume for Halloween, or a 1940’s army helmet which often led to him yelling "fire in the hole!" as fireworks exploded all around him, which was followed by him hiking up his pants to impersonate Urkel. As a true “girl Dad”, he also happily donned a frilly pink tutu, to make his adult daughters laugh, while skipping thru Disney World on vacation.

He was a lover of travel, Hawaiian shirts, all things Cleveland Guardians baseball, and most importantly, Bonnie. They lived for A-List preferred status on Southwest with the Companion Pass, which led them to many grand adventures around the country. Together they saw everything from beaches in Hawaii, to the Smokey mountains of Tennessee, to a rather large bar tab at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans. Most recently, their adventures included seeing the Cleveland Guardians play at all of the MLB Stadiums across the country. Alas, their adventure was short, just 6 stadiums!

He is proceeded in death by his father and mother, John and Dorothy Lane; stepfather Dick Perryman; his Aunt & Uncle Ted and Rose Spanke; his Aunt Barbara Teumac; cousin Dave Spanke; in-laws Herb and Jane Cline; cousin/best friend John Spanke; best Friend/coworker Dave Wilson, who we know greeted him with open arms, a dirty joke and an adult beverage.

He leaves behind a great legacy and a tremendous void in the lives of all those who knew him. Mostly, his loving wife, Bonnie, who is angry and will never let him forget that he went first. His pain in the butt, yet loving daughters Jessica (Donald Schultz) and Suzanne Lane; step-granddaughters, Addalyn and Kaylee Schultz; his twin sisters, Jackie (David Beneker) and Jenny (Donald Moster); multiple nieces and nephews; the entirety of the epic Cline Clan family; with a special shout out to the best neighbors and friends Doug and Kelly McEldowney.

We welcome all those who wish to celebrate his life on Saturday, November 14th at Waite Funeral Home, 765 N Court St., Medina, Ohio. Family will receive friends from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, with a Memorial Service immediately following at 12:00 pm, followed by a luncheon. We ask that you come dressed in your best Hawaiian shirts, Cleveland Guardians gear, armed with funny stories and any Mike Lane-isms you carry with you daily. He was F-U-N, so that is how he would want to be celebrated!

While he loved giving Bonnie fresh flowers, in lieu of flowers, we encourage a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Also, as always, he would like the world to know--he in fact rode a train once.
