Robert “Bob” Kelly, a devoted family man, respected community leader, and lifelong public servant, passed away on April 28th at the age of 79.
Born on August 16, 1946, in Medina, Ohio, Bob lived a life defined by service, generosity, and a deep commitment to his community. He was the son of William and Ruth Kelly and grew up in Granger, where he first developed the values of hard work and compassion that would guide him throughout his life.
Professionally, Bob served as President of Bil-Jac Foods, where he played a pivotal role in guiding the company’s growth and upholding its reputation for quality and innovation in the pet food industry. Under his leadership, Bil-Jac continued its legacy as a family-driven business, rooted in a commitment to animal nutrition and care. He was widely respected not only for his business acumen, but also for the integrity and values he brought to his work, leaving a lasting impact on both the company and the broader industry.
Bob also played a significant leadership role beyond his company, serving as chairman of the Pet Food Institute from 2009 to 2011. During his tenure, he guided the pet food industry through a pivotal period marked by the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act, helping companies adapt to stronger safety and regulatory standards.
Bob devoted 28 years to the Highland school board and 14 years to the Medina County Board of Education, helping shape educational opportunities for generations of students and families. Bob received numerous honors recognizing his exceptional service, including the Ohio School Board Association’s Veteran Board Member Award in 2022, the Highland Pride Award in 2024, and induction into the Highland Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2025. Additionally, he served as a township trustee for 16 years, where he was known for his steady leadership and dedication to improving the lives of residents.
Bob built a distinguished career in both public service and private life and his contributions reflected a lifelong belief in the importance of education and civic responsibility.
Beyond his public roles, Bob was deeply committed to giving back. He was a philanthropist who quietly supported numerous causes and individuals in need. Bob served on the Board of Directors for the Medina County Hospital and Huntington Bank and also served on the Boards of various local companies.
One of his most meaningful contributions was opening his home to the world—he and Becky fostered many foreign exchange students, creating lasting bonds and friendships that spanned countries and cultures.
Those who knew Bob will remember him not only for his accomplishments, but for his character—his kindness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to others. He had a gift for bringing people together, whether through public service, mentorship, or simple acts of generosity.
Bob is survived by his wife Maria Rosario Avila Kelly, children Drew (Tiffany) Miller, Alassane Kouyate (Madouce), Aly (Holiday) Samabaly, Ibrahim Konate, Dulce, Raul, and Alejandro Avila. Grandchildren include Ethan and Emersen Miller, Adriella, Safina, Altesse Samabaly, Adia, Aicha, Jordan, Alina, Djedje, and Gnama Kouyate. He was preceded in death by his wife, Becky Kelly.
