Obituary

Russell James Schafer, beloved husband, devoted father, faithful brother, and steadfast friend, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on December 2, 1955, in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, to Carl Schafer and Audrey Hartigan Schafer, Russell lived a life defined by quiet service, deep loyalty, and abiding love for his family.

Russell is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Michelle Garrity-Schafer. Together they raised four cherished children: Mary Theresa, Brian Michael, Stephen Matthew, and Christine Clare, each a testament to the values Russell and Michelle worked so tirelessly to instill.

He is also survived by his brother Glenn Schafer (Audrey). He was preceded in death by his brother Gary Schafer (Mary). He was a loving uncle and brother-in-law to many in both the Schafer and Garrity families.

Russ graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in education, a foundation that would shape his entire professional life. He began his teaching career in the Shaler school district, the very school he had attended as a student, where he taught industrial arts with the same hands-on dedication he would carry throughout his life.

His path eventually led him to Richfield, Ohio, where he embarked on a profoundly meaningful second chapter at the Veterans Administration in Brecksville. Drawing on his industrial arts background, Russell worked alongside veterans in the workshop, helping them develop skills and find purpose. Over the years, he grew into the role of Vocational Counselor, Educator, Supervisor, and Advocate, a trusted guide who dedicated himself to helping veterans navigate their vocational futures. Russell finished his fulfilling career at the Cleveland VA, where he continued to advocate for veterans. His career was not merely a profession but a calling, and those he served knew it.

Beyond his work, Russ embraced life with an easy joy. He was an avid motorcyclist who treasured long, unhurried rides through the countryside. He found peace outdoors, spending time with his family camping, canoeing, and fishing. He loved to be in his workshop in the company of friends and neighbors. Above all, Russell was a devoted family man who poured his personal wisdom into his children, watching with pride as they grew into the loving, flourishing adults he always believed they would become.

Russell James Schafer lived as he loved - fully, faithfully, and with great purpose. He will be forever missed and forever remembered.
