Thomas (Tom) von Deak, age 67, passed away on July 30, 2021. He was born in Lackawanna, New York on April 26, 1954, to Andor and Sigrid (Kroll) von Deak. After graduating from Frontier Central High School, Tom received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.
In 2018, Tom retired, after working for more than 20 years at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as the National Remote Sensing Manager for the Office of Spectrum Management in the Space Communications and Navigation Program. A high point in his career was participating in the Advanced Component Technologies Satellite (ACTS) Program, which NASA called one of the revolutionary breakthroughs in space communications history. After retiring from NASA, Tom continued to contribute to spectrum affairs, working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), as well as the National Science Foundation.
Tom was a joyful and kind person, committed to the world around him. As a devoted father, he coached Buckeye youth soccer and served as a scoutmaster in Medina County. Tom was a member of the soccer league, ski club, and golf league at NASA Glenn. He enjoyed gardening. Tom was an avid photographer, admirer of trees, and eager handyman.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Amanda (nee Collins); his cherished children and stepchildren, Dieter (Kathryn) von Deak, Laura (Wesley) Boettner, Amelia von Deak, Ahren von Deak, Jill (David) Nosse, Rina Welch, and Christopher Welch; his treasured grandchildren, Tyler von Deak, Avery von Deak, Sylvia Nosse, Richard Nosse, and Desmond Nosse; and his beloved siblings, Andrew (Candace) von Deak, Michael von Deak, and Sylvia (Thomas) Dilenschneider. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Shiva Kaur (Mahan Deva) Singh.
