Obituary

Timothy Jon Frantz, age 73, passed away suddenly on August 3, 2024. Born in Cleveland on July 23, 1951, to the late Howard and Hildegarde Frantz (nee Schmotzer). Tim is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Mary Frantz (nee Satiroff); dear children Patricia (Michael) Power and Timothy Frantz; and treasured grandchildren Griffin, Dahlia, and Rosemary Power, to whom he was "Pa."

Tim grew up in Parma Heights, where he would make childhood friendships that would last a lifetime. Graduating from Valley Forge High School in 1969 and obtaining his B.S. in Chemistry from Cleveland State University in 1975, Tim embarked on a 35-year career as a paint chemist – with roles at Sherwin-Williams, Glidden, and PPG – developing formulas for clients such as John Deere, Weber, and General Motors. Tim was regarded as much for his field expertise – having won a prestigious technical award in 2001 – as he was for his patience, mentorship, and compassion as a colleague.

Nothing was more important to Tim than his family. From the moment he met Mary at a New Year's Eve party in 1977, Tim never looked back. Mary was the light of Tim's life, his best friend, and his perfect complement. Married at St. Paul's in Akron on October 5, 1979, they created a beautiful life built on and sustained by their shared Catholic faith; included homes in Medina, OH, Charlotte, NC, and Nashville, TN; and which they always navigated as an exceptional team. In retirement, Tim cherished the sweet, sacred simplicity of his day-to-day life with Mary, enjoying the fruits of their years of hard work and planning. They loved cooking, reading, walking, playing cards, and listening to their favorite music together; especially, Motown and Soul, British Invasion, 60s/70s rock, and modern Country.

Tim was a lifelong learner who never lost his sense of curiosity about the world around him. Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of US and European history, music, and sports – especially his beloved Indians, Browns, and Cavs, a passion he shared with his son Tim. A voracious reader, Tim loved sharing book and movie recommendations with Mike, whom he loved deeply and considered a second son. Tim passed his legendary "steel-trap" memory of dates and trivia to Tricia and Griffin; Tim's penchant for dates made it even more special when Dahlia was born on his 64th birthday in 2015.

Despite living states away, Tim loved spending time with his grandchildren – teaching Griffin to play pool, chaperoning Dahlia's school field trips, and inspiring Romy's interest in books. Tim also greatly enjoyed astronomy, photography, playing poker with his son Tim and his dear friends of over 60 years, and regaling everyone around him with the best stories from all seasons of his life, all of which will be told and re-told, keeping his loving and humorous spirit alive.

Tim's absence leaves a stunning, unimaginable void. But his kindness, generosity, selflessness, and lovable quirkiness will live on – within and through the ones he loved so well.

"How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard?" (A.A. Milne)
