Obituary

Wilma Diane (Balog) Maurer, 82, passed away on November 27, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on January 23, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she grew up and graduated from West Technical School in 1961. During her high school years, she proudly served as head majorette, a role that reflected her confidence, grace, and spirited personality. Wilma also loved to dance and was an accomplished jitterbug dancer, winning many jitterbug contests with her late partner, Joe Vella—a testament to her energy, rhythm, and joy for life.

Wilma dedicated many years of service to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 469, where she served as President and Secretary.  She also served as a flag bearer for the Spirit of 469 Color Guard, who were State and National Champions. She was deeply committed to supporting veterans and her community.

Wilma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Maurer, who passed away in 2022. Their marriage was a true partnership—filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. They cherished their summers camping with friends in West Salem for many years and later embraced retirement in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where they formed many meaningful friendships. Together, they loved spending time playing cards, board games, dominoes, and taking occasional trips to the casino. These simple joys brought them great happiness and created memories their family will forever treasure.

Wilma enjoyed a long and dedicated career at Firestone Tire and Rubber, working in the credit department. She took great pride in her work and retired after many years of loyal service. Her colleagues remember her for her reliability, professionalism, and genuine kindness.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Gary) Sobanski, and her granddaughter, Raechel (Justin) Popek, who were the lights of her life. Wilma is also survived by her brothers, Peter (Marsha) Balog and William Balog, along with nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts.

Wilma will be remembered for her warmth, resilience, and the steadfast love she shared so generously with those around her. Her gentle presence, caring nature, and devotion to family and friends have left a lasting imprint on all who knew her. Her memory will continue to be cherished and celebrated.

She will be laid to rest with her husband at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.
