Gayle fell in love with dance at an early age and enjoyed performing at the legendary Karamu House as a teenager. Gayle also adored children and was passionate about education and early childhood development. As an elementary and middle school teacher in Portland, Oregon and Shaker Heights, Ohio, Gayle enriched the lives of countless students and proudly held a Masters in Education.

Gayle was a devoted mother of six children: Piper, William Jr., Shelley, Heather, Lindsey, and Alison, as well as six grandchildren: Jordan, Taylor, Hannah, Dillon, Aiden, and Rowan. In addition to spending time with her family, Gayle loved dancing, singing, listening to music, going to the theater, sewing, making fudge, and taking care of her cherished miniature schnauzer, Riley.

In addition to her children and grandchildren, Gayle is survived by her older sister, Beverly. She is predeceased by her eldest sister, Iris, and her former husbands, William and Clarence.

On April 28, 2022, Gayle peacefully passed surrounded by her children and listening to her favorite soundtrack, Out of Africa. She will always be remembered as a strong, independent, and fearless woman and mother who's love and devotion to her family was unconditional and boundless. When asked how she was doing, Gayle would often say "I'm still kicking!" As we celebrate her life and legacy, we know she's still kicking and dancing on high.
