Robert F.
Pennington
June 23, 1922 – August 9, 2022
Robert F. Pennington, age 100, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022, in Medina, Ohio. He was born on June 23, 1922, to parents Robert and Helen (Anthony) Pennington in Cleveland, Ohio. The subsequent divorce of his parents when he was 1 ½ years old initiated his mother to send Bob into the care of his grandparents, Fred, and Florence Anthony to be raised on their fruit farm in Clyde, Ohio. At age 14, he rejoined his mother in Cleveland, Ohio to live with her there. He graduated from John Marshall High School in June of 1940. He went off to work for Alcoa in their study department. This is where he met the love of his life, his future wife, Rae Pendleton. Rae was a secretary there. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Bob enlisted in the Army Air Corps in August of 1942. Since early childhood he dreamed of being an Army Pilot. He was called to active duty on February 5, 1943, from Moody AFB he graduated with his Pilot's Wings as a 2 nd Lt and Army Air Force Pilot. His new orders were to report to the Army Air Base in Boise, Idaho. (A B-24, 4 engine bomber crew training base.) During a four-day delay enroute to Boise, Bob and Rae were married and she accompanied him to Boise as his wife. After training the crew were assigned to the 8 th Air Force in Europe.
After serving 35 missions over Europe and returning to the U.S. Bob got a job as an instructor at Cleveland Hopkins Airport which led to a job as a company pilot for an international engineering and construction company, McDowell Engineering. They had just bought their first company airplane and hired Bob as the company pilot.
In the late 50's Bob gave up his flying career and went into sales for the company. In the early 60's Bob and Rae invested in land in Montville Township on Tower Road and built Ridge Top Golf Course. At around the same time, he was transferred to Chicago, Illinois as Manager of the company office. Bob resigned from that position and continued ownership and management of Ridge Top Golf for 25 years. He enjoyed working with his wife and watching his two daughters grow up working on the course until it was sold in 1982 and he retired. Bob enjoyed being a longstanding member of Medina United Methodist Church.
In retirement, Bob and Rae enjoyed golfing with their friends and Bob especially enjoyed passing on his love of golf to his grandkids, often taking them to Ridge Top and other local courses. During retirement, Bob rebuilt a Triumph, took up watercolor and acrylic painting, and enjoyed daily trips to the Rivers Styx Buehler's shopping and talking with staff.
Bob was part of 'The Greatest Generation' and believed and lived out "The American Dream".
Robert is survived by his children, Jane F. (Ricky) Williams, Jill S. (Alan) Clark, grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Dubsky, Nathan Williams, Aaron (Lauren) Clark, Krista (Jonathon)Steedly, and great grandchildren, Taylor, and Logan Clark.
